It seems to me that injections into the lip would hurt

Question:

It seems to me that injections into the lip would hurt. I would like lip augmentation, but I am worried about the pain. What injectable filler do you routinely use on the lips? Do you first apply a topical anesthetic before you do the injections? What size needle do you use?

Answer:

The lips are very sensitive, but I do a number of things to take care of the pain. I do use a very strong numbing cream for 1 hour before the injections and I do have Restylane that has lidocaine, a numbing agent in the syringe. Also, for patients that want their lips completely numb for the injections, I do nerve blocks which are injections of lidocaine in 4 locations-2 in the cheek and 2 on the chin which make the lips totally numb for the injections. I like Restylane and Juvederm for lip augmentation.
