Is it possible for blepharoplasty to damage my tear ducts?

Question:

I have chronic dry eyes but would like to have both upper and lower blepharoplasty. Is it possible for this surgery to damage my tear ducts?

Answer:

Theoretically, it is possible for blepharoplasty to damage the tear ducts, but I have done over a thousand of these surgeries and not had any injuries to the tear ducts. In any case, the tear ducts don’t make tears or even bring the tears to the eyes. The tear ducts drain the tears from the eyes into the nose. If they were injured, this would not make the eyes drier. In fact, if the tear ducts were blocked, this would increase the amount of tears in your eyes and help dryness.
