My six-year-old daughter has large ears that stick out pretty far from her head. All along I thought that we could just deal with this and make sure to build up her self confidence, but she’s already experiencing teasing from other kids and at such a young age! So I started thinking about ear surgery for her but I have to say that the prospect of electing surgery for your child is just terrifying.
Just as with anything in life, one must weigh the possible risks and benefits of otoplasty for your daughter. If her ears protrude significantly and she is being teased, this can have a very bad effect on her self esteem. Any surgical procedure has some risk, but the risk is extremely low if the surgery is done by an experienced surgeon at a facility that treats lots of kids. I have done hundreds and hundreds of otoplasties and I have not had any significant complications whatsoever. In my opinion, if the ears protrude significantly, and the child is suffering cruel treatment from other children, the benefits of the procedure far outweigh the risks.
