Facial Nerve Paralysis

Skin Grafts

Facial wounds from trauma, cancer removal, or birth defects may require additional skin tissue to heal correctly. Skin grafts, harvested from a donor site on another area of the body, can provide improvement in form and function for open wounds on the face and neck. There are three types of skin grafts: a split-thickness skin graft made only of surface skin cells, a full-thickness skin graft of all skin layers, and a composite graft in which all layers of skin as well as cartilage and support structures under the skin are harvested. Taken from an inconspicuous area, these grafts usually heal as a straight-line scar that fades over time.

Flap Surgery

Flap surgery uses adjacent skin and tissue to cover a wound on the face or neck. Because the flap is still attached to the original site, it is still connected to the blood supply.
