Neck Lift Surgery

Excess skin, fat, and muscle that hangs below the jawline, also known as the “turkey wattle,” can be unflattering to the entire facial appearance. Many have lost weight by following a healthy diet and regular exercise regimen yet are still left with excess soft tissue below the chin and on the neck. Unfortunately, even at-home remedies are no match against hanging skin, muscle, and stubborn fat. Neck lift surgery is designed to reverse the effects caused by gravity, weight loss, and aging to provide a more slim and contoured neck.

Accentuated Facial Features

When the neck is lax due to hanging skin, muscle, and excess fat, it can affect a person’s overall facial harmony. A neck lift is designed to smooth the skin, lift the sagging muscle, and remove excess fat to create a more defined neck and jawline. As a result, it will improve the entire facial appearance while accentuating the facial features rather than drawing negative attention to the neck.

A Rejuvenated Appearance

Sagging skin and muscle as well as excess chin and neck fat can cause wrinkles and fine lines to develop. Once the skin and fat are removed, tightening of the neck skin will improve fine wrinkles along the chin and neck area, creating a softer, smoother, and younger look.

Increased Confidence

Many people feel as if they look unattractive when they have sagging skin and fat below the chin, also known as the dreaded “double chin.” Once the excess fat is removed and sagging skin and muscle are corrected, patients may no longer feel insecure about their facial appearance. With improved neck contours, patients often experience a boost in confidence and finally feel comfortable in their skin.

During your consultation, you will discuss your goals and concerns with Dr. Pontell. He will examine the skin and excess fat below your chin and in your neck. It is important to discuss any previous and present medical conditions, surgeries, and allergies during your consultation. After a careful examination, Dr. Pontell can help you decide whether neck lift surgery is right for you. If it is determined that this is the procedure for you, Dr. Pontell may use computer imaging to provide you with a better idea of what your results could look like.

Procedure

Dr. Pontell customizes every surgery to the patient’s anatomy and goals based on his or her severity of lax, hanging skin, muscle, and excess fat. Most surgeries will involve a small incision under the chin and/or behind the ears. Through the incision(s), Dr. Pontell will remove excess fatty tissue and tighten the neck muscle (platysma muscle). Hanging excess skin below the chin will be carefully trimmed away, and the remaining tissue and skin will be repositioned and secured with sutures. The incisions will then be closed, and drains may be placed.

Recovery

Immediately following the procedure, the neck will be wrapped in surgical dressings. If the surgery was under general or sedation anesthesia, the patient will be closely monitored. After about one hour, the patient is allowed to go home. Before surgery, it is important that the patient designates a driver.

In one to two weeks, most of the swelling and bruising will subside. After this time, the majority of patients feel well enough to return to work and normal activities. The neck will continue to heal for several months. Once residual swelling has subsided and healing is complete, a rejuvenated, tighter neck contour will be revealed.

Scars

Typically, incisions will be discreetly hidden under the chin area and/or behind the ears. Any scarring should fade over time as healing progresses. Eventually, scars will be barely noticeable, if even visible at all.

Pain

Minor discomfort following surgery is common. Dr. Pontell can prescribe medication to help alleviate any post-surgical pain.

What if a Revision Neck Lift Is Necessary?

Patients sometimes come to Dr. Pontell for a revisional neck lift. Typically, it is because they were unsatisfied with previous results from another doctor. It is important that patients who are interested in a revisional neck lift wait at least six months after their primary neck lift procedure. This will ensure that the tissues are fully healed and that results are completely apparent.

Faq

  • Who is the best candidate for neck lift surgery?
Patients who have hanging skin and excess fat below the chin they would like to correct may be good candidates for neck lift surgery. This is a serious procedure, and patients should be in good health and have realistic expectations. It is also recommended that patients refrain from smoking for at least four weeks before and four weeks after surgery.
  • How long will my neck lift results last?
With a healthy lifestyle, neck lift results can last for many years. However, neck lift surgery does not halt the aging process. It is important that patients follow a proper skin care routine, including limiting sun exposure, for more lasting, enjoyable results. Patients can undergo a cosmetic procedure in the future to maintain results, such as injectables or Ultherapy®, if they desire.
  • What type of anesthesia is used for neck lift surgery?
This surgery can be done with local, intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. Dr. Pontell and the patient decide which type of anesthesia would be best for them.

As with any surgical procedure, there can be some risks and complications associated with neck lift surgery. Some of these may include:
    • Infection
    • Bleeding
    • Allergic reactions
    • Anesthesia risks
    • Damage to underlying structures
  • Can neck lift surgery be combined with other procedures?
