A PLASTIC SURGEON EXPERIENCED WITH ETHNIC RHINOPLASTY MAKES A DIFFERENCE
Are all doctors who perform rhinoplasty familiar with ethnic rhinoplasty? Is it necessary to get a surgeon with particular training or experience with patients of ethnicity? What should I look for in a surgeon in this case?
Rhinoplasty is very different in different ethnic groups. It is very important to have a surgeon who has alot of experience operating on the type of nose that you have. Asian and African American patients tend to have wider, less projected noses with thicker skin and weaker cartilages then Caucasian patients and the techniques to deal with these issues are very different. I did my residency in New York City where I did many rhinoplasties on African American patients. In African American patients as with Asian patients, cartilage or silicone or goretex implants may be used along with techniques to narrow the cartilages and nasal bones and nostrils. Patients should ask their doctor to show them examples of cases that they have done in noses with similar issues to their own.
