IMPLANTS USED WITH ASIAN NOSE JOBS
Question:
Is it common for Asian rhinoplasty to involve augmentation? How is this achieved? Are implants used?
Answer:
Yes, in Asian rhinoplasty, augmentation of the bridge of the nose and the nasal tip are often performed. If an implant is used, I usually use the patient’s own cartilage from the nasal septum or from behind the ear. If a patient needs a large amount of augmentation of the bridge, then a silicone or goretex implant may be used. I only use the patient’s own cartilage to augment the nasal tip. In some patients, simply narrowing the nose accomplishes the goal and implants are not necessary. I spent 3 and 1/2 years in Hawaii after my fellowship where I did many Asian rhinoplasties.
