Eyelid Lift

The eyes are the windows to the soul, and when there is sagging or drooping above the eyes or bags under the eyes, it can make a person appear old and tired. Superficial signs of aging around the eyes can make it hard for a person to feel confident about how others perceive them. Unfortunately, at-home treatments are no match against signs of aging in the eye area. Eyelid lift surgery is a perfect option for someone looking to correct bags, fine lines, wrinkles, and a “hollow” appearance around the eyes.

Before & After Photos

Achieved With Eyelid Lift Surgery

Reduced Fine Lines and Wrinkles

Eyelid lift surgery involves the removal of excess fat and skin to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes. Patients can enjoy smoother skin and a more refreshed appearance after this procedure.

A Younger, More Alert Appearance

Excess skin and sagging tissues around the eyes can cause a person to look tired, sad, or old. A patient can expect the eyes to look more alert and youthful once displaced fat is removed or redistributed, excess skin is removed, and sagging muscles are tightened.

Improved Vision

Although eyelid lift surgery is often known as a cosmetic procedure, many people undergo the surgery for vision reasons. When the upper eyelids have excess, hanging tissue that nearly touches the pupil, a person may find that their vision is obstructed. Eyelid lift surgery involves the removal of droopy eyelid skin and muscle tightening, if necessary, to correct impaired vision.

What Does an Eyelid Lift Entail?

Prior to your procedure, you will meet with Dr. Pontell and he will evaluate your facial structure, goals, and concerns. He will examine the structures of your eyebrows and forehead to determine how to create the most aesthetically pleasing outcome. Once he has a complete understanding of your goals, Dr. Pontell will suggest the appropriate brow lift technique for your facial anatomy.

For upper eyelid surgery, an incision is made within the natural fold of the upper eyelid. For lower eyelid surgery patients who only need fat removed, Dr. Pontell makes an internal (transconjunctival) incision within the lower eyelid. When excess skin also needs to be removed from the lower eyelid, a small incision is made just under the lower eyelashes. Through the incisions, fat is removed or repositioned, sagging skin is removed, and muscles may be tightened to provide more flattering eyelid contours.

After surgery, Dr. Pontell will provide you with instructions on properly caring for your surgical wounds. Iced saline gauze pads and ointments can be used to help to ease swelling and discomfort. The first few days after surgery, bruising and swelling will occur, and cold compresses will be applied to minimize these. The average patient feels normal within a week and returns to work in about 10 days. Most people can resume regular physical activity in two weeks.

For the most part, incisions will be hidden along the natural lines and creases of the eyes. Once healing is complete, the scars will fade over time and are not generally visible.

Patients will typically experience some minor discomfort from surgery; however, any pain can be alleviated with medication prescribed by Dr. Pontell.

What If a Revision Eyelid Lift Is Necessary?

Dr. Pontell has seen many patients who have undergone an eyelid lift with another doctor and were not satisfied with the final results. It is important that the patient who is wanting a revisional eyelid lift waits for at least six months to a year after their initial procedure; this will ensure that full results are apparent and that the tissues have healed completely.

  • How long will my eyelid lift results last?
Eyelid lift results can be enjoyed for many years to come, but the procedure does not halt the aging process. The eyes can develop other signs of aging in the future, but this can be slowed down by practicing healthy habits, such as not smoking and wearing sun protection.
  • Will I be able to look like another person?
Rhinoplasty will not give you the exact nose of a celebrity or another particular person; the procedure will refine or enhance the nose you already have. No person has the exact skin thickness, amount of cartilage, and bone structure as another person, so it is not possible to make an exact copy of another person’s nose. Dr. Pontell will review your desires and your anatomy to determine how he can provide the best result.
  • Who is a good candidate for eyelid lift surgery?
Patients who have excess sagging skin in the upper or lower eyelids that causes the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, or under-eye bags may be good candidates for eyelid lift surgery. It is important that patients are non-smokers (or willing to quit before and after surgery), are in good health, and have realistic expectations.
  • What kind of anesthesia is used for eyelid lift surgery?
Local anesthesia, intravenous sedation, or general anesthesia will be administered to provide comfort throughout the surgical process.
  • Will my eyes look “pulled back” after eyelid surgery?
Plastic surgery has improved over the past few decades. The most recent and modern techniques are designed to help patients achieve natural-looking results. Dr. Pontell is an experienced facial plastic surgeon who offers the latest advancements in eyelid lift surgery. He can help you achieve results that make you appear more youthful while maintaining your unique look.
  • Can eyelid lift surgery be combined with other procedures?
Eyelid lift surgery is often combined with other procedures to address other signs of facial aging. It is commonly performed along with facelift surgery, brow lift surgery, injectable fillers, and BOTOX® Cosmetic.
