Lip Augmentation

Among the facial features that represent health and vitality are the lips. Most people want plump, kissable lips that look young, luscious, and healthy. However, some people are not naturally blessed with full lips, and aging can cause the lips to lose volume. It may not sound like an area to be concerned with, but many people are bothered by their thin, undefined lips. Lip augmentation can be performed to create fuller lips while diminishing fine lines and wrinkles. With many different techniques offered, patients can receive a personalized lip augmentation treatment from Dr. Pontell.

Before & After Photos

Achieved With Lip Augmentation

Fuller Lips

By adding lip volume with facial fillers or surgical procedures, Dr. Pontell can help patients achieve lips that look and feel fuller and more youthful.

Reduced Wrinkles

While lip augmentation is mostly performed to add fullness to the lips, many patients will notice the anti-aging benefits it can offer. By creating larger, plumper lips, lip lines and wrinkles can be smoothed out.

Regained Confidence

When one area of the face is not satisfactory or in harmony with the rest of the facial features, a person can feel self-conscious of their overall look. They may avoid taking pictures or have difficulty putting on makeup such as lipstick. After lip augmentation, patients will smile proudly with confidence and no longer shy away when it comes to "picture time."

What Does a Lip Augmentation Entail?

During your consultation with Dr. Pontell, you will go over your goals and he will evaluate your lips. Lip augmentation can be performed with Restylane®, JUVÉDERM®, a vermillion lip advancement, or a subnasal lip lift. Dr. Pontell will go over each procedure and help you determine the best option for achieving your goals. Dr. Pontell uses computer imaging to provide his patients with a better idea of what results they could potentially achieve.

Restylane® and JUVÉDERM® are soft injectable tissue fillers made of hyaluronic acid, a substance that can be found naturally in the body. The procedure takes anywhere between 15 and 30 minutes, which entails several injections along the lip area. These products can also be used around the eyes, mouth, or forehead to target facial wrinkles and lines. Restylane® and JUVÉDERM® are deemed safe and effective for lip augmentation and for treating facial lines and wrinkles. These filler treatments pose little to no risk of allergic reaction in people who are sensitive to animal by-products.

The vermillion lip advancement technique is a surgical procedure designed to increase the size of the pink part of the lip (the “vermillion”). An incision is made along the outside border of the lips, and a small portion of skin is removed from above the upper vermillion border and/or below the lower vermillion border. The lip is then pulled and sutured to the remaining skin to make the lips appear larger.

The subnasal lip lift involves the removal of a strip of skin from the crease between the upper lip and the base of the nose. Removing this piece of skin and closing the incision lifts the upper lip and makes it appear fuller.

Injectable lip augmentation requires little to no downtime; patients can return to work and regular activities immediately. Restylane® and JUVÉDERM® patients may experience some bruising and swelling at the injection sites that should diminish within a few days. Vermillion lip advancement and subnasal lip lift patients should avoid strenuous activities for the first week, after which sutures will be removed. There may be some discomfort along the incision(s) that will alleviate within a few weeks.

The vermillion lip advancement and subnasal lip lift are surgical procedures and do involve some incisions. Depending on the patient’s level of healing, scarring will become less noticeable over time and blend with the natural border of the lips. Restylane® and JUVÉDERM® treatments will not result in any visible scarring.

There may be some pain or discomfort during Restylane® and JUVÉDERM® injections; however, it is quite manageable. Any discomfort following surgical lip augmentation can be controlled with pain medication.

What if a Revision Lip Augmentation Is Necessary?

If you received unsatisfying results from your last lip augmentation procedure with another doctor, you might be considering a revision lip augmentation. Dr. Pontell can evaluate your results and help you decide when is the best time for a revision. Typically, it is recommended to wait until the face is fully healed before undergoing another procedure.

  • Will I still look like myself after lip augmentation?
The goal of lip augmentation is to make subtle changes that correct aged or undefined lips without looking like there was work done. Dr. Pontell will perform a lip enhancement using the most advanced techniques to provide the most natural-looking results possible.
  • How long will my lip augmentation results last?
The duration of your results will depend on the technique employed. Restylane® and JUVÉDERM® can last up to one year. Vermillion lip enhancement and subnasal lip lifts are designed to be permanent; however, changes to the lips can occur due to poor health habits, such as smoking, and the natural aging process.
  • Will I have to stay overnight in a hospital?
Patients can return home immediately following their lip augmentation treatment.
  • Will lip augmentation make me look younger?
One benefit of undergoing lip augmentation is that it will smooth out the skin on the lips and mouth, resulting in a reduction in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Can lip augmentation be combined with other facial procedures?
Lip augmentation is often combined with other facial procedures for a full facial makeover, such as facelift surgery, eyelid surgery, or rhinoplasty. Dr. Pontell can evaluate your facial anatomy to help you determine the best complementary procedure for you face.
