What is a chin reduction?

A chin reduction is a surgical procedure that reduces an overlarge chin by removing excess bone and tissue to achieve better harmony of your facial features. This procedure is customized for each individual’s unique needs and aesthetic preferences, resulting in the most attractive balance for the features of your face.

What happens during the chin reduction procedure?

Your consultation with Dr. Pontell

Dr. Pontell with meet with you prior to your procedure to discuss your goals in reducing the size of your chin. He will examine your chin and facial features and help you understand the details of the chin reduction procedure.

If the aesthetic concern is not the chin but is instead a double chin, with extra skin that has collected under the jawline, a facelift or neck lift may be the best procedure. Liposuction may also be used to remove extra fat.

Dr. Pontell may also recommend combining other procedures with your chin reduction, such as a brow lift, rhinoplasty, a facelift, or other surgeries that will augment your results and achieve beautiful facial proportions. Dr. Pontell will use computer imaging to help you visualize your potential results.

Surgical procedure

Chin reduction is performed under general anesthesia or intravenous sedation. During chin reduction surgery, an incision is made on the underside of the chin. This incision is relatively small and placed precisely so that the scarring is minimal and are barely noticeable once healed.

Through the incision, Dr. Pontell will reshape and remove some of the bone structure and soft tissues to create the desired chin shape. Once this is complete, the incision is meticulously closed to produce the least possible scarring.

Recovery after a chin reduction

After surgery, you will be able to go home with a friend or family member to help you. Dr. Pontell recommends that patients sleep in an elevated position for at least one week. He may also restrict you to a soft food diet for 10 days as you heal. During your recovery period, patients may experience some discomfort, but the pain should not be significant and can be treated with prescription medications and over the counter medication.
