What is a lip lift?

A lip lift is a surgical procedure that shortens the skin between your upper lip and nose, and unfurls the upper lip, enhancing the shape and size. With a lip lift, the upper lip shape is also refined into more of a cupid’s bow. After a lip lift, the mouth is more balanced and symmetrical, and the overall appearance is more youthful and appealing.

What does a lip lift correct?

Genetics or age can cause the upper lip to partially cover your teeth when you smile, resulting in a smile that looks unusual or causes you to appear older.

With age, the red of your upper lip begins to curve inward, causing the lip to look thinning and the appearance of your smile to change. When your upper lip is thin, your smile can look “gummy,” meaning a wide section of the gums show and the lip disappears.

A lip lift effectively resolves the following concerns:

  • Sagging upper lip
  • Curving or rolling inward of the upper lip
  • A gummy smile
  • A thin upper lip
  • A smile partly covered by a drooping upper lip
  • A disproportionate or lengthening distance between the upper lip and the nose

Many people rely on facial fillers or Botox to correct these concerns. While they are certainly effective, fillers and Botox are temporary and can only do so much. A lip lift achieves proper proportion between the upper lip and the rest of the mouth and facial features, creating a beautiful symmetry and lip fullness. Results are so long-lasting, they can be thought of as permanent.

What should I expect during a lip lift?

Local anesthesia is injected into the upper lip area. Dr. Pontell will draw marks under your nose where he will make the incision. This is made very carefully in the natural folds of the skin to hide any scarring.

Dr. Pontell will then remove a small section of skin just under the nose. He will gently lift the lip upward toward the nose, securing it with sutures.

Recovery

There will be swelling and soreness in your upper lip area for a few days after your procedure. Keep your incision clean and use the antibacterial ointment provided for the first week, as directed by Dr. Pontell.

Most patients need between 1-4 days to rest and recuperate. While you’ll be able to get back to sedentary work and many of your usual activities quickly, avoid exercise or strenuous physical activity for about two weeks.
