Addressing Common Aging-Related Concerns

As we get older, it is normal to notice changes in the body. Signs of aging, such as sagging skin, wrinkles, and fine lines, can leave patients feeling uncomfortable with what they see in the mirror. Areas like the neck, jawline, and jowls can all be affected by this process, developing issues such as a double chin or jowls. Moreover, these conditions are usually genetic, meaning they are incredibly difficult to treat on our own.

What Is Neck Liposuction?

Neck liposuction is a quick and highly effective surgical procedure designed to address fat accumulations on the neck and underneath the chin region. This surgical procedure works by sculpting and redefining the contours of the neck, making it firmer and removing any excess pockets of fat. The results of this procedure tend to look incredibly natural, making it nearly impossible for onlookers to deduce that the patient has undergone surgery.

Benefits of Neck Liposuction

  • More aesthetically appealing profile
  • Reduction of submental fat (double chin) and jowls
  • Little scarring
  • Results are permanent
  • Quick procedure
  • Relatively short recovery process
  • More youthful, attractive neckline and overall appearance
  • Boost in self-confidence

Neck Liposuction Procedure

As with any cosmetic procedure, the first step is to have a private consultation with Dr. Pontell. During this meeting, the patient’s neck structure, skin elasticity, and underlying musculature will all be thoroughly evaluated. Patients will have the opportunity to voice their concerns regarding the procedure and give details about their aesthetic goals. Dr. Pontell will go over all the surgery details and make any recommendations for additional treatments that may be beneficial.

Local anesthesia is administered at the beginning of the procedure. Once it has kicked in, small incisions are made underneath the chin. These incisions are no more than one or two millimeters in length.

A cannula (small, thin tube) is inserted into these incisions, loosening the excess fat and prepping it to be suctioned out by the vacuum. This aspect of the procedure is carried out in a gentle, precise manner to ensure that the contours of the neck and jaw are sculpted attractively. The small incisions are then sutured shut. The entire procedure takes about one hour to complete.

Patients are fitted with a pressure bandage to help mold the treated area into the desired shape. This protocol also helps mitigate any bruising or swelling that may develop. Patients will be able to return home immediately following the procedure.

Recovery Process

Following the procedure, it is normal for patients to experience some bruising, swelling, and numbness. Patients must keep their heads elevated and refrain from strenuous activities for the first two weeks after the surgery.

Most patients can get back to work within a few days of the procedure, provided it is light work and doesn’t require them to be active. The scars usually take several months to fade away, but they are typically small and unnoticeable as the incisions are tiny.

Once the swelling has dissipated, patients notice that their neck and jawline look firmer and tighter. The results from this treatment are permanent, but neck skin and muscle do continue to age.
